A sewer inspection in Dolton, IL is a plumber feeding a small waterproof camera into the main drain line and watching the pipe on a monitor. The camera shows the material, cracks, root entry, sags and buildup, so a decision about repair is based on footage instead of a guess.
This is a diagnostic visit, not an emergency repair. If sewage is already coming up through a drain, see our emergency repair page for first steps, then come back to this page once the line is stable.
What the footage can show
Each finding has a different meaning and a different next step.
| What we see | What it means | Usual next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fine roots at a joint | Gap in the pipe letting moisture out | Cutting, then a repair plan |
| Grease coating the wall | Kitchen waste building up | Jetting and a habit change |
| Standing water in a low spot | Belly or sag in the line | Monitor or replace section |
| Cracked or broken wall | Failed pipe, soil entering | Lining or dig and replace |
| Offset joint | Two pipe ends out of line | Spot repair |
Who should book a sewer camera inspection
Not everyone needs one, but these cases usually justify it.
- A drain that has clogged more than once in the same year
- A house you are about to buy, especially an older one
- Several fixtures gurgling or draining slowly at once
- A wet or sunken patch in the yard along the line
- A sewer smell that cleaning has not fixed
- Plans for a basement bathroom or a big landscaping job
Want to see inside the line?
Call to book a camera inspection. Same-day appointments are available when we have room.
Buying a home: inspect the line before closing
A standard home inspection does not usually include the underground sewer line. A camera inspection can reveal roots, offsets or a broken section that would be costly to fix after closing. Ask the seller for access to a cleanout, and plan the visit before your inspection period ends.
If the footage shows trouble, you can negotiate, ask for a repair or walk away. We provide the video and explain what it shows. We do not tell you what to offer, because that is between you, your agent and the seller.
How the inspection works
A visit usually takes under an hour, though a long or complex line can take longer.
Find the entry point
We look for a cleanout cap near the foundation or in the basement. Without one, we may need to pull a toilet.
Run the camera
The camera head has lights and a cable that records distance as it travels toward the street.
Locate the line
A transmitter on the camera lets us trace the pipe above ground and mark depth and path.
Review the video
We show you the footage, explain each finding, and give a clear price before any repair work.
What a camera cannot tell you
A camera shows the inside of the pipe, not the soil around it. It cannot measure how much a leak has washed away underground, and it cannot see past a full blockage until the line is cleared. In a very small or collapsed pipe, the camera may stop before the end of the run.
It also cannot tell who owns the line. That question goes to Dolton Public Works at 708-201-3280. We can show where the pipe runs, but the village decides its side.
Dolton sewer backups and why inspection helps
Cook County's hazard plan for Dolton lists repeated basement flooding in areas such as the Southern Corridor and 144th and Indiana, and says some of it happens when the sewer backs up in severe rain. FEMA counts 34 repetitive-loss properties in the village.
A camera inspection cannot stop a backup that comes from the main. It can show whether your own line is sound, so you know whether to fix the house side or take the issue to the village. The plan also proposes overhead sewers for about 500 homes, which is worth asking about if backups follow every big storm.

A camera inspection is a diagnostic, and your insurance may treat it differently from repair work, so ask your agent. Want your real number? Call (773) 207-0518.
Linking an inspection to the rest of your plumbing
If the footage shows an underground line problem, our sewer line repair page explains the options, and a clogged but intact line can be scoured with high-pressure jetting. For homes in Calumet City and other nearby towns, call the same dispatch line.
